HERAKLION

Located on the northern coast of the island and 25 km west of Hersonissos, Heraklion is the capital of Crete and a city full of history, culture, and stunning natural beauty. From exploring ancient ruins and tasting traditional Cretan cuisine to soaking up the sun on stunning beaches and venturing on day trips to nearby destinations, Heraklion has something to offer every traveller. One of the most famous Minoan sites in Heraklion is the Palace of Knossos, which is just a short drive by car or bus from the city and is believed to have been the center of Minoan civilization. Another well-known landmark is the 16th century Fortress of Koules in the westernmost side of the old Venetian port, a significant and imposing sight.

LASSITHI PLATEAU

For nature lovers, a visit to the largest mountain plain in Crete, Lasithi Plateau, is a must-do day trip from Heraklion. Located about an hour’s drive from the city, this beautiful plateau is set at an altitude of 800 meters and surrounded by towering mountains that are dotted with traditional windmills. Visitors can take a scenic drive through the plateau, which covers an area of 25 kilometers, stop to admire the stunning views, and enjoy a traditional Cretan meal at one of the local tavernas. The Lassithi Plateau is easily reachable from Star Beach Village and is perfect for those who want to combine sea and mountain.

CRETAQUARIUM

Cretaquarium is the first and one of the largest aquariums in Greece and has been operating since 2005. It is located near the town of Gournes in Crete, approx. 15 km east of the city of Heraklion. This fun, impressive aquarium features 60 tanks and over 100 viewing points, representing interesting underwater Cretan Sea landscapes and hundreds of marine species, from hunter sharks to lobsters, to colourful jellyfish.
